Perfumer H - Charcoal | Sample
The Architecture: Perfumer H Charcoal
Lyn Harris built Charcoal around a single raw material that most perfumers avoid: isobutyl quinoline — a synthetic chemical leather note that smells industrial, inky, and slightly dangerous on its own. Here it is the architecture. The opening is cade oil and cedar, resinous and burnt, the smell of scorched wood rather than smouldering incense. Isobutyl quinoline enters as the composition settles, and the effect is immediate: the leather turns dark and almost graphite-grey, chemical and fiercely elegant simultaneously, like the interior of a brutalist building that has been rained on. Indonesian patchouli and Haitian vetiver in the heart add an earthy mineral density — roots and dark soil — while labdanum prevents the whole from becoming purely industrial. Elemi and resin in the base give the drydown a faintly luminous, cold quality. The olfactory equivalent of wet concrete in winter: specific, severe, and difficult to forget.
