The composition is an exercise in controlled darkness — a nocturnal forest rendered in smoke, resin, and cold green light. The opening is extraordinary: clary sage and chrysanthemum unfurl with a cold, medicinal shimmer, cistus and cypress leaf adding a resinous, silvery-green haze that feels genuinely otherworldly. Gentian root anchors the opening with a bitter earthiness, like damp soil beneath a conifer. The heart is where Nordstrand's mastery is on fullest display: a Frankincense CO2 extraction — not the dry, church-incense kind but a cool, citrussy, almost lunar incense — meets labdanum's dark resinous char and Nootka spruce, whose slight acrid crushed-leaf wildness keeps everything from becoming too polished. This is incense as forest phenomenon, not liturgy. The base is a slow revelation: cade juniper brings a smoky, tarry warmth; Chinese cedar and candlewood add camphor-kissed woody depth; patchouli weaves through without announcing itself; musk holds it all together like the cold air of a clearing at midnight. One reviewer described it as Heilung summoning spirits in a forest — not operatic shrieking but guttural chanting. Another: nothing else has come close to this feeling. They are both right.
